A mesh topology (mesh topology) is an organisational structure Computer Networks or communication system in which each device (node) is directly connected to one or more other nodes, creating a network with a high degree of redundancy and flexibility. In a full mesh topology (full mesh), each node has a direct connection to all others, ensuring maximum resilience to failures and minimum transmission delays. In the partial version, only selected nodes are directly connected, reducing complexity and cost while maintaining important functional characteristics.
The main advantage of the mesh topology is its resistance to interference and the possibility of dynamically rerouting traffic in the event of failure of any link or node. Thanks to the multiplicity of transmission paths, data can be transmitted via different routes, which increases the reliability and availability of services. This architecture promotes load balancing and enables distributed information processing. For this reason, it is used in military networks, Industrial Networks, smart grids, IoT systems and Wi-Fi mesh wireless networks.
At the physical layer, the mesh topology can be implemented wired or wireless, with wireless versions (e.g. ZigBee, Z-Wave, Thread) being particularly popular in distributed applications where installation flexibility is crucial. Managing a mesh network, however, requires the use of advanced routing algorithms, synchronisation and maintenance of routing tables to ensure performance and consistency of transmitted data.
Although a full mesh topology is associated with high infrastructure costs and complexity, partial implementations of the mesh topology allow a compromise between reliability and efficiency, while maintaining the characteristics of this architecture: scalability, decentralisation and fault tolerance.
