Scott transformer (Scott system) - definition

The Scott transformer is a special transformer system that allows the conversion of three-phase voltage to two-phase voltage and vice versa, while maintaining power equivalence and minimising load asymmetry. It consists of two coupled single-phase transformers: a main transformer and an auxiliary transformer, connected in such a way as to produce two output voltages with a 90° phase shift relative to each other, characteristic of two-phase systems.

The principle of operation is based on an appropriate selection of gears and winding tapping points, making it possible to convert the symmetrical three-phase system into two independent, orthogonal two-phase voltages. The main transformer is connected to two phases of the three-phase system, while the auxiliary transformer is connected to one phase and to the special tap point of the first transformer, located at 86.6% of the winding length. This connection ensures that the voltage ratio is maintained in line with the two-phase system and allows mutual reactive power compensation between the windings.

Others found this solution particularly applicable in the US and Japanese industries during the transition period between two-phase and three-phase systems, where it facilitated the interoperability of equipment based on different power supply standards. It was also used in drive systems and traction systems where there was a need to power two-phase motors from a three-phase network or vice versa. Nowadays, Scott transformers are used infrequently, mainly for specialised or laboratory purposes, but they are still an important example of the application of network theory and the transformation of multi-phase systems.
