The optocoupler, also known as optocoupler, is an electronic component used to galvanically separate two electrical circuits while allowing signal transmission between them. It works by converting an electrical signal into light and converting it back into an electrical signal, thus providing electrical isolation while maintaining information continuity.
A typical optocoupler consists of a light-emitting diode (LED), which emits light in response to an input current, and a photodetector, usually a Phototransistor, Photodiode or Phototristor, which responds to this light on the output side. Both components are enclosed in a single opaque enclosure, eliminating the influence of external light and increasing the reliability of operation. By separating the input and output using light, the optocoupler effectively protects sensitive digital or low-voltage circuits from overvoltages, interference and potential differences occurring in power circuits or long signal lines.
Optocouplers are commonly used in Automation, control systems, medical equipment, Converter Modules, data transmission systems and microprocessor devices where isolation protection is needed between the high and low voltage parts. Their properties are defined by response time, isolation voltage, current transfer coefficient (CTR) and resistance to electromagnetic interference, among others. Optocouplers enable the safe and reliable transmission of control pulses, logic or analogue signals in high-interference environments, thanks to their variety of designs and parameters.
