Armature - definition

Armature is an essential component of electrical machines, in particular generators and motors, responsible for converting electrical energy into mechanical energy or, conversely, mechanical energy into electrical energy. Its function depends on the mode of operation of the machine: in a generator, it induces voltage as a result of an alternating magnetic flux, while in a motor it conducts current and produces torque by interacting with a magnetic field.

The armature is most often a wound core placed in the area of the magnetic field generated by the poles of the permanent magnets or excitation windings. Depending on the machine design, it can be a rotating part (in commutator machines) or a stationary part (as in most synchronous and asynchronous machines). A key role in armature operation is played by the phenomenon of electromagnetic induction - the changing magnetic field crossing the windings leads to an electromotive force, the value and nature of which depend on the relative speed and geometry of the magnetic circuit.

In classical DC machines, the armature contains a winding wound on an iron core and a commutator, which provides current rectification and allows torque continuity. In alternating current (AC) machines the armature winding is usually located on the stator, which facilitates energy collection and simplifies cooling. The parameters of the armature, such as the number of windings, the cross-section of the cables, the type of winding or the method of cooling, directly affect the efficiency, power and dynamic characteristics of the electrical machine. Armature design must also take into account resistance to electromagnetic forces, thermal deformation and mechanical loads occurring during machine operation.
