UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle) - definition
The UCAV (Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle), or Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle, is an advanced aerial platform designed to conduct armed operations without a direct pilot on board. This device combines the characteristics of a traditional combat aircraft with autonomy and remote control technology, enabling offensive missions such as precision strikes, neutralisation of ground targets, elimination of airborne threats or support of special forces operations, while minimising the risk of crew loss.
Equipped with multispectral observation systems, electro-optical sensors, synthetic aperture radars and advanced algorithms for real-time processing of data, the UCAV can operate in both network-centric environments and limited communications. Today's platforms of this type often have the ability to integrate with C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) systems, allowing them to co-operate with other units within a distributed battlefield.
Structurally, UCAVs can rely on aerodynamic stealth solutions to minimise the effective radar reflective surface area, increasing their ability to penetrate heavily protected airspace. Powered by turbojet or propeller engines, with payloads including guided missiles, cluster bombs or precision munitions, they are a key component of modern strategic architectures.
