Discrete system - definition

A discrete circuit is an electronic or logic system built from individual, non-integrated components - so-called discrete components - such as resistors, capacitors, Diodes, Transistors or Thyristors that are physically connected together to form a functional whole. Each of these components has a distinct role and clearly defined properties, allowing circuits to be designed and analysed at the level of the basic components.

In the context of analogue electronics, a discrete circuit may perform amplification, filtering, rectification, voltage stabilisation or signal control functions. In digital applications, on the other hand, it can include logic gates, counters, registers or clock circuits, constructed from single transistors or primitive integrated circuits. These circuits are the opposite of integrated circuits (monolithic), in which many functions are performed inside a single semiconductor structure.

A characteristic feature of discrete circuits is their functional transparency and the possibility to modify individual parameters by selecting specific component values. This facilitates the learning, prototyping and repair process, especially in educational and workshop applications. The disadvantages of discrete circuits can be higher volume, complexity of assembly and lower reliability compared to integrated circuits.

More broadly, the term 'discrete circuit' is also sometimes used in systems and control theory, where it refers to a system operating at discrete points in time - as opposed to a continuous system - but in electronics it more often emphasises the physical design aspect based on separate components.
