Watchdog - definition
Watchdog is a specialised electronic circuit or software mechanism that supervises the correct operation of a digital system, the purpose of which is to automatically detect when the main program is blocked or suspended and to restore its operation by initiating a reset. It is primarily used in embedded systems, Automation devices and applications requiring high reliability and continuity of operation.
The principle of the watchdog is based on the use of a timer counter, which must be regularly reset (so-called kick, pet or feed) by the supervised program within a fixed time interval. If the counter reaches a critical value without a response from the programme, the watchdog recognises this as a sign of a system error and triggers a reset procedure. This makes it possible to automatically restore the system to its initial state in situations such as loop jamming, CPU overload, resource misallocation or other unforeseen conditions leading to a stoppage.
The watchdog can take the form of a hardware circuit (e.g. in the form of a dedicated timer integrated in the microcontroller) or be implemented in software, but hardware solutions provide greater independence and resistance to logic errors. In more complex systems, it is also possible to monitor multiple conditions simultaneously or use advanced algorithms state analysis.
The use of a watchdog is particularly important in unmanned, autonomous systems operating in industrial, communications and medical environments, where the rapid detection of errors and self-resumption of operation is critical to the safety, availability and stability of the operation of the device or the entire technological process.
