Weber (Wb) - definition

Weber (Wb) is a derived unit of the SI system used to measure magnetic flux. It is defined as the amount of magnetic flux that, in a closed electrical circuit causes the induction of an electromotive force of one volt (V), when it undergoes a homogeneous change in one second. Formally, one weber corresponds to one tesla (T) times one square metre (1 Wb = 1 T-m²).

This unit is named after the German physicist Wilhelm Weber, co-founder of electromagnetism, and has been adopted as a standard in electromagnetic nomenclature. Magnetic flux quantitatively describes how strong magnetic field passes through a given surface and is a scalar quantity, being the integral of the magnetic field with respect to the surface through which the field passes.

In practice, the Weber unit is used in the analysis of magnetic circuits, the design of transformers, coils, electric motors, generators and in electromagnetic induction issues. In the context of Faraday's law, the change in magnetic flux over time is the direct cause of electromotive force, which is the fundamental operating principle of many electrical devices.

Since the value of one weber is relatively large compared to typical engineering applications, aliquots of this unit, such as milliweber (mWb) or microweber (μWb), are often used in technical practice. Measuring and analysing magnetic flux using the weber unit enables the precise determination of the magnetic properties of materials and the dynamic characteristics of electromagnetic systems.
