Visual programming language - definition

A visual programming language is a class of programming languages, in which the creation of application logic is done primarily through the graphical representation of structures and relationships rather than through traditional textual syntax. In this type of language, programs are built by manipulating graphical objects - blocks, icons, diagrams or flowcharts - that represent operations, variables, conditions or control flow. Each visual element corresponds to a specific piece of functionality and can be linked to others through defined logical or data relationships.

The primary goal of visual programming languages is to simplify the software development process, especially in educational environments, industrial automation and rapid prototyping of systems. These types of languages make it easier for people without advanced knowledge of text-based programming to understand the logic behind a programme's operation, while also allowing intuitive data flow and control to be followed. Due to their nature, they are often used to teach basic algorithmic concepts and in systems SCADA, robotics or PLC Drivers.

Visual programming languages can be implemented as stand-alone environments or as graphical interfaces that generate source code in text-based languages (e.g. C, Python). Examples of such languages include Scratch, Blockly, LabVIEW, Simulink, or Ladder Diagram used in logic controller programming. Their effectiveness depends on the clarity of the symbology, the ability to scale the complexity of the project, and integration with other engineering and programming tools.

From a technical point of view, visual programming languages are based on formal syntactic and semantic rules, just like textual languages, but their code structure takes the form of a graphical representation of a syntax tree or flow graph. A well-designed visual language allows both the unambiguous interpretation of a programme and its compilation or interpretation by an execution machine.
