An electroacoustic amplifier is an electronic device designed to increase the amplitude of acoustic signals converted to electrical form for effective reproduction by speakers, headphones or other electroacoustic transducers. It is a key component of the audio path, connecting the sound source - such as a microphone, musical instrument, player - to the end devices used to emit sound. Its task is to ensure the appropriate level of power and quality of the processed signal while maintaining the lowest possible distortion.
From a technical point of view, an electroacoustic amplifier performs the function of amplifying a voltage or current signal without changing its shape and frequency characteristics. It usually consists of several stages: a preamplifier, a tone corrector, a power stage and protection circuits. Others can operate in different amplification classes (e.g. A, B, AB, D), which determine power efficiency, linearity and thermal characteristics. Modern designs often use pulse amplifiers (class D), characterised by high efficiency and compact size.
Electroacoustic amplifiers are divided into analogue and digital, with the latter using digital domain signal processing (DSP), which enables advanced equalization, filtering and dynamic sound processing algorithms. These devices can be stand-alone components of sound systems or part of integrated audio systems in consumer, professional and industrial equipment.
Parameters describing the quality of an amplifier include frequency response, non-linear distortion coefficient (THD), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and output power. Their selection and configuration depend on the application requirements, the type of transducers and the acoustic characteristics of the environment in which the amplifier is used. In sound engineering and acoustics, the electroacoustic amplifier plays a fundamental role in achieving the desired sound, dynamics and spatiality of the audio signal.
