ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket is a specialised electrical socket designed for the installation of integrated circuits (ICs) or processors without the need for force during insertion. The operating principle of this type of connector is based on a lever or rotary mechanism, which, in the open position, fully releases the contact terminals, in the open position, allowing the component to be inserted freely into the socket. Only when the mechanism is closed are the terminals pressed against the circuit leads, ensuring reliable electrical contact.
ZIF sockets are widely used in electronic engineering, especially in test environments, eEPROM/Flash memory programmers, prototyping systems and personal computers, where they were used as bases for interchangeable processors. Their main advantage is the ability to repeatedly install and remove integrated circuits without the risk of damaging delicate pins or the connector itself, which is important in laboratory and service applications.
Structurally, the ZIF socket can be adapted to chips with different numbers and pin arrangements - from the classic DIP (Dual In-line package) to the more advanced LGA (Land Grid Array) and PGA (Pin Grid Array) used in modern microprocessors, used in modern microprocessors. These versions vary in clamping method: from side thrust pins to central screw or slide mechanisms, which distribute the force evenly across the connector.
ZIF sockets eliminate the need for assembly tools, speed up service work and reduce the risk of mechanical damage. This makes them an indispensable component of test benches and automatic programming systems of electronic components. Precise mechanical and material design ensures reliable connections even under conditions of intensive use and repeated use.
