Epoxy resin is a thermosetting polymer obtained by the polycondensation reaction of epichlorohydrin with bisphenol A or its derivatives. It is characterized by the presence of epoxy groups, which during the crosslinking process react with hardeners, such as amines, acid anhydrides or polyamides, forming a permanently cross-linked, three-dimensional structure with high mechanical and chemical strength. After curing, the epoxy resin exhibits excellent adhesion properties, low shrinkage, high resistance to chemical agents and good dielectric properties, which makes it a material of wide technological application.
In materials engineering, epoxy resins are commonly used as matrices in glass fiber reinforced composites, carbon or aramid, used in the aerospace, automotive and construction. In electronics, these resins act as flooding materials and protective coatings, protecting electronic systems from moisture, corrosion and mechanical damage. By adjusting formulation parameters, such as resin/hardener ratio, gel time and viscosity properties, it is possible to adjust the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of the final product to meet specific application requirements.
Epoxy resins are also valued in adhesive applications, where, thanks to their ability to permanently bond a variety of materials, such as metals, ceramics, glass and plastics, play a key role in the manufacture of structures requiring high reliability and resistance to environmental factors. Modern technologies are also developing the use of epoxies with modified molecular structures, which offer enhanced flexibility, thermal conductivity or specialized barrier properties.
