Electrical node - definition

An electrical node is a point in an electrical circuit, where at least three current-carrying branches connect. In theoretical terms, it refers to the point where all connected wires and elements have the same electrical potential, regardless of their nature - resistive, capacitive or inductive. In circuit analysis, the concept of a node is crucial when using the mesh method and the node method, which are essential tools in electrical engineering and electronics.

The node acts as a logical reference point when defining the voltages between different parts of a circuit. It is assumed that the voltage at a given point in the circuit relates to the potential relative to a chosen reference node, the so-called ground or zero point. From this, equations are built to describe the relationship between currents and voltages, following Kirchhoff's law for currents, which states that the algebraic sum of the currents flowing in and out of a node is equal to zero.

In engineering practice, the node concept is not only used in the analysis of electrical schematics, but also in the modelling of power grids, Integrated circuits, power systems and Logic integrated circuits. In multi-connected circuits, node identification makes it possible to reduce analysis complexity, optimise PCB designs and automatically generate matrices describing network properties.

From a circuit topology perspective, a node defines the boundaries between branches - elementary network sections containing a single circuit element or a set of them in which the current has a uniquely defined direction of flow. Node analysis is one of the basic tools in the design and diagnosis of electronic circuits, supporting both computer simulations and classical hand calculations.
