The ampere (A) is the SI unit of electric current and one of the seven base units in the International System of Units. It defines the amount of electric charge passing through a point in a circuit per unit time—specifically, one coulomb per second. The unit is named after André-Marie Ampère, a 19th-century physicist and pioneer in the field of electromagnetism, whose work laid the foundation for the fundamental principles of electric current and its magnetic interactions.
As of the 2019 redefinition, the ampere is defined in terms of the elementary charge constant. According to this definition, one ampere corresponds to the flow of exactly 1⁄(1.602176634 × 10⁻¹⁹) electrons per second, which equals approximately 6.241 × 10¹⁸ elementary charges per second. This formulation ties the unit directly to fundamental physical constants, eliminating reliance on the macroscopic properties of measuring instruments and ensuring consistency and precision.
In practice, the ampere quantifies the intensity of current flowing through an electrical circuit. The current level directly affects the design, operation, and safety of electrical components such as transformers, conductors, fuses, and power supplies.
