Alternating current (AC) is a form of electric charge flow in which the direction and magnitude of the current vary cyclically over time, typically in a sinusoidal manner. Unlike direct current, where charge flows continuously in one direction, alternating current periodically reverses direction, enabling more efficient transmission of electrical energy over long distances and broader applicability in power supply systems.
The primary parameter characterizing alternating current is its frequency, which indicates the number of complete cycles of current direction change per unit of time. In most countries, the frequency of the power grid is either 50 Hz or 60 Hz, meaning the current reverses direction 50 or 60 times per second, respectively. Other important quantities include the root mean square (RMS) value, peak value, and instantaneous current and voltage, which describe the energy and dynamic characteristics of the signal.
Alternating current is most commonly generated by synchronous generators in power plants, where mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy through electromagnetic induction. Due to the use of transformers, AC voltage can be easily increased or decreased, significantly reducing power losses during transmission and distribution. This feature was crucial in the global adoption of AC-based power systems.
The applications of alternating current encompass nearly all areas of power engineering, electronics, and automation - from powering residential and industrial devices, through electric drives, to energy conversion systems. In electronic and digital circuits, AC often requires rectification or regulation, performed using rectifiers, inverters, and converters. The analysis of AC waveforms must take into account their harmonic content, phase shifts, and impedance, making alternating current theory fundamental to electrical and power electronics engineering .
