The electricity grid is a complex technical system designed to transmit and distribute electricity from generation sources to end consumers, comprising line infrastructure and substation equipment. Its task is to ensure the continuity of energy supply with the required voltage and frequency parameters, while maintaining reliability, safety and energy efficiency.
The structure of the electricity network is functionally divided into three main levels: transmission networks, distribution networks and consumption networks. Transmission networks operate at high and highest voltages (usually 110 kV to 400 kV) and are used to transport large amounts of energy over considerable distances between power plants, transformer stations and main consumption points. Distribution networks, operating at medium (e.g. 15-30 kV) and low voltages (230/400 V), carry out local energy distribution to industrial, municipal and individual consumers.
Components of the electricity network include overhead and cable lines, transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protection, automation and telecommunications systems and metering equipment. Network management is carried out by transmission and distribution system operators, supported by advanced systems SCADA, traffic control centres and power balancing and operation planning systems.
Today's electricity grid is increasingly being upgraded towards smart infrastructure (smart grid), enabling the integration of renewable energy sources, bi-directional energy flow, dynamic load management and communication with consumers. The key challenges for the electricity grid remain supply reliability, system stability, balancing demand and supply, and resilience to disruptions and cyber threats.
