Renewable energy sources (RES) - definition
Renewable Energy Sources (RES) are a category of energy resources whose exploitation does not lead to permanent depletion of their potential, as they are subject to continuous renewal through natural environmental cycles. These are sources of natural origin, such as radiant energy solar, wind, water, biomass or geothermal energy, whose resource does not diminish due to exploitation over a time horizon relevant to humanity.
In energy engineering, RES are the foundation of a sustainable energy system with low greenhouse gas emissions and reduced environmental impact. Unlike conventional fossil fuel-based sources, renewable energy sources do not generate pollution during the conversion process and can be geographically dispersed, which increases energy security and flexibility of the electricity system.
Power Sources conversion can take many forms, including the conversion of solar radiation energy into electricity (photovoltaics) or heat (solar panels), wind energy into mechanical and electrical energy (wind turbines), or Earth's thermal energy into usable heat (geothermal).
Renewable energy sources are important not only from an environmental point of view, but also from an economic and geopolitical point of view, as they reduce dependence on imports of energy resources, favour the decentralisation of energy production and accelerate the development of low-carbon technologies. Today's energy transition strategies assume an increasing share of RES in the energy mix, accompanied by investments in energy storage, grid flexibility and digital demand and supply management systems.
