Radiant energy is a form of energy transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves or as a stream of particles emitted by a radiation source. It may occur as electromagnetic radiation - ranging from radio waves to gamma rays or as corpuscular radiation, such as the emission of alpha particles, beta particles, or neutrons. In both cases, energy is transferred across a distance without requiring matter as a transmission medium, distinguishing it from mechanical or thermal energy.
In the case of electromagnetic waves, radiant energy depends on the wave's frequency and the number of transmitted photons, with each photon carrying an energy quantum proportional to its frequency, as described by Planck’s constant. This energy can be absorbed by matter, triggering various effects such as heating, ionization, chemical reactions, or the emission of secondary radiation. The interaction of radiation with matter depends on factors such as wavelength, intensity, and the physical and chemical properties of the material encountered.
Radiant energy plays a vital role in numerous natural and technological processes. In astrophysics, it is responsible for transferring energy from the interior of stars—including the Sun—to space and Earth’s surface. In technology, it is utilized in telecommunications, medical imaging, nuclear engineering, solar energy systems, diagnostics, and therapy. In the field of radiation protection, accurate measurement of radiant energy is essential for assessing its effects on human health and environmental safety.
