*The smart grid* is a next-generation integrated electricity system that combines traditional transmission and distribution infrastructure with information, communication and industrial automation technologies. Its main objective is to dynamically manage the flow of electricity, taking into account varying load conditions, distributed generation, energy storage and end-user activity.
Unlike classic grids, the smart grid enables bi-directional transmission of both energy and information, allowing automatic monitoring, analysis and response to changes in real time. Its infrastructure includes advanced metering systems (AMI - Advanced Metering Infrastructure), smart meters, network sensors, IoT devices, demand-side management (DSM) systems, and platforms for data analysis and consumption prediction.
A key aspect of the smart grid is the flexibility and ability to integrate renewable Power Sources, such as photovoltaic installations or wind turbines, which are characterised by highly variable production. Thanks to smart technology Automation it is possible to balance local demand and supply, minimise transmission losses and optimise grid operation under unstable conditions. Smart grid also supports the development of electromobility, by managing the charging of electric vehicles and working with energy storage facilities.
Solutions of this type require a high level of cyber security, interoperability of devices and compliance with industry standards and regulations. By digitalising energy management processes, smart grids enable users to actively participate in the energy market, e.g. through flexible tariffs, microgeneration or participation in prosumer schemes. The integration of these technologies promotes improved energy efficiency, system stability and the sustainability of the energy infrastructure.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
