Control engineering (automation) is a field of science and technology focused on the theory, design, and implementation of systems that enable autonomous control of processes without direct human intervention. Its primary objective is to ensure precise and reliable operation of devices or installations based on predefined conditions and real-time response to changing input signals. Control engineering integrates knowledge from mechanics, electrical engineering, electronics, computer science, and control theory.
Automation systems incorporate measuring, processing, and actuating components that collectively enable real-time decision-making. This allows for the continuous regulation of parameters such as temperature, pressure, position, or speed, even under dynamically changing conditions. Control engineering is widely applied in manufacturing, energy production, transportation, construction, medicine, and building management systems—contributing to increased efficiency, safety, and process repeatability.
Advancements in digital technologies and the miniaturization of electronic systems have led to the proliferation of modern automation solutions, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), industrial networks, and smart technologies. Contemporary control engineering plays a central role in the implementation of the Industry 4.0 concept, where machines and systems operate autonomously, leveraging real-time data to optimize performance.
