Impedance is a complex physical quantity that describes the opposition a component or electrical circuit presents to the flow of alternating current. It generalizes the concept of resistance by incorporating both the real part—associated with energy losses in the form of heat—and the imaginary part, which corresponds to capacitive or inductive reactance. Impedance is expressed in ohms and denoted by the symbol Z, with its magnitude and phase depending on the signal frequency and the characteristics of the components within the circuit.
In complex notation, impedance is represented as the sum of resistance R and reactance X, written as Z = R + jX, where j denotes the imaginary unit. Reactance is positive for inductive components and negative for capacitive ones. This means that impedance affects not only the amplitude of the current but also the phase shift between voltage and current. Impedance analysis enables accurate determination of resonance conditions, energy losses, and the frequency response of circuits.
In electroacoustic engineering and signal transmission, impedance plays a crucial role in ensuring proper matching between the signal source, transmission medium, and receiver. Improper impedance matching can lead to signal reflections, distortion, and power loss. In practical applications—such as the design of filters, amplifiers, transmission lines, and measurement circuits—understanding impedance allows for the optimization of electrical and electronic system performance. In laboratory measurements, impedance analyzers are used to precisely determine the characteristics of passive components and to study their behavior as a function of frequency.
