Reactance is the imaginary component of complex impedance, describing the opposition to alternating current (AC) flow presented by passive elements in an electrical circuit that do not dissipate energy as heat. Unlike resistance, reactance does not consume energy but temporarily stores and releases it in electric or magnetic fields, resulting in a phase shift between voltage and current.
