Amplitude refers to the maximum deviation of a periodic signal from its average value or equilibrium point. In the context of physics and engineering, it denotes the greatest value attained by a physical quantity—such as voltage, current, pressure, or displacement—over time or space. It is a measure of the intensity or “strength” of a given wave phenomenon, regardless of its frequency or waveform.
In sinusoidal signals, the amplitude precisely defines the wave's height—from zero to its peak value. It can be expressed as peak (maximum), RMS (root mean square), or peak-to-peak value, depending on the measurement context and adopted standard. In technical applications such as vibration analysis, acoustics, or signal processing, amplitude is one of the fundamental parameters used to describe a system’s dynamic behavior or the strength of an interaction.
Variations in amplitude can indicate the presence of disturbances, signal fading, or changes in a system's operating conditions. In communication engineering, amplitude modulationy involves deliberately varying this parameter to encode information onto a carrier signal. In engineering practice, accurate determination of amplitude is critical for diagnostics, control, and ensuring the reliability of devices and measurement systems.
