Signal processing - definition

Signal processing is a field of technology and computer science that deals with the analysis, modification and interpretation of signals - both analogue and digital - in order to optimise them, extract information or transform them into a more useful form. Signals can represent data from different physical sources, such as sound, images, electrical voltage, temperature or electromagnetic radiation. The processing process allows for noise reduction, enhancement of desired features, coding, compression and preparation of the signal for further transmission or analysis.

In analogue processing, operations are performed directly on continuous signals using electronic circuits such as filters, amplifiers or modulators. In contrast, digital processing, carried out by specialised DSP processors or programmable circuits, involves discrete analysis of signal samples that have previously been obtained through sampling and quantisation. The digital form of the signal allows the use of advanced mathematical and statistical algorithms such as Fourier transforms, adaptive filtering, wavelet decompositions or machine learning techniques.

Applications of signal processing cover a wide range of technologies, including telecommunications, medicine, Automation, acoustics, radar systems, speech processing, image recognition and sensory analytics. Processing efficiency depends on the quality of the algorithms, the computational power of the system and parameters related to the bandwidth, dynamics and frequency range of the signal being analysed. Also crucial is the ability to distinguish between relevant information and noise, which determines the effectiveness of the final analysis or control.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers. TME’s modern logistics centers in Łódź and Rzgów (Poland), with a combined area of over 40,000 m², ship nearly 6,000 packages daily to customers in more than 150 countries.

TME also invests in the development of knowledge and skills of young engineers and electronics enthusiasts through the TME Education project, and supports the tech community by organizing the TechMasterEvent series, promoting innovation and experience exchange.
