Sampling is the process of converting a continuous signal in the time domain into discrete form by measuring it at specific, uniform time intervals. It is a key step in analogue-to-digital conversion, enabling further signal processing in digital systems. In the context of electronics and signal engineering, a sample is a single signal amplitude value recorded at a given time.
The sampling rate, i.e. the number of measurements taken per unit time, is decisive for the quality of the reproduction of the original signal. According to the Nyquist-Shannon theorem, for distortion-free signal reconstruction to be possible, the sampling frequency must be at least twice the highest frequency present in the source signal. Failure to meet this condition leads to the aliasing phenomenon, in which signal components overlap and generate an erroneous frequency spectrum.
Sampling can apply to both one-dimensional signals, such as sound, and multidimensional signals, e.g. images, where it is responsible for spatial resolution. The sampling process is usually accompanied by additional operations such as anti-aliasing filtering to reduce the bandwidth of the signal before conversion.
In digital systems, samples are processed and stored as binary numbers, allowing them to be compressed, analysed and transmitted over telecommunications networks. Sampling plays an important role in data acquisition measurement, digital signal processing (DSP), audio synthesis, control systems and multimedia technology.
