A Modulator is an electronic device or circuit used to change the parameters of a carrier signal, such as amplitude, frequency or phase, in order to encode on it the information contained in the useful signal. The process of modulation is a key step in data transmission systems, enabling the efficient transmission of information over long distances via transmission channels such as radio waves, optical fibres or wired communication networks.
In classical analogue modulation, the modulator changes the properties of the continuous carrier signal according to the instantaneous values of the modulating signal, implementing schemes such as amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM) or phase modulation (PM). In digital systems, keying modulation (ASK, FSK, PSK) and more advanced techniques such as quadrature-amplitude modulation (QAM) are used to increase the spectral efficiency of transmission.
The technical implementation of modulators includes both analogue circuits - using mixers, amplifiers and resonant circuits - and digital circuits, where the modulation process takes place at the digital level using digital-to-analogue converters (DACs) and signal processors (DSPs). In modern communication systems, modulators are often integrated in integrated circuits, supporting dynamic adjustment of modulation parameters in response to transmission channel conditions.
Specialised applications, such as satellite transmissions, optical communication networks or radar systems, use high-precision modulators capable of operating with wide frequency bands and very high data rates, requiring advanced error correction and energy optimisation techniques. The modulator therefore plays a fundamental role in shaping the quality, throughput and reliability of modern telecommunications and information transmission systems.
