Capacity - definition

Capacity is a general technical term referring to the maximum capacity of a given system, device or process to process, transmit or transport a given amount of resources per unit time. Depending on the technical context, it can refer to different fields such as data transmission, systems engineering, Automation, logistics or signal processing. It is most often expressed in quantitative units per second, e.g. bits per second for digital data, units of volume in flow systems or number of operations in computing systems.

In communication systems, throughput describes the maximum amount of data that can be transmitted over a channel or network in a given amount of time, regardless of any interference or loss. In the context of computer systems, it can refer to the ability of a processor, bus, Interfaces input/output or memory to handle a specific stream of information. In Automation and Mechanical Engineering, on the other hand, the term refers to the performance of production lines, conveyors, valves or pumping systems.

From a technical point of view, system throughput is sometimes limited by physical components, transmission delays, interference, design parameters and control algorithms. Its optimisation is an important issue in system design, as it directly affects efficiency, response time, reliability and economy of operation. In practice, throughput can be time-varying and depend on current system operating conditions, configuration and load.
