Modulation is the technical process of superimposing an information signal, usually of low frequency, on a higher frequency carrier signal in order to enable its effective transmission over long distances or through a specific transmission medium. This operation consists in changing one of the parameters of the carrier wave - amplitude, frequency, phase or a combination thereof - according to the waveform of the modulating signal. As a result of modulation, the signal is shifted into a band that allows efficient transmission with minimal interference, attenuation or interference.
This technique forms the basis of analogue and digital communication systems, including radio, television, mobile telephony, wireless networks, as well as satellite and data communications. Modulation makes it possible to transmit multiple signals simultaneously in different channels by varying their carrier parameters, significantly increasing the bandwidth capacity and efficiency of use of available frequency resources.
In digital systems, modulation is realised by assigning specific logical values to discrete changes in the parameters of the carrier signal, allowing the transmission of binary information. Depending on the technique used, modulation can provide noise immunity, high transmission rates or low power consumption, which determines its choice in a given communication environment.
The reverse process of modulation, the recovery of information from a modulated signal, is called demodulation. Both modulation and demodulation are key components of any transmission system, requiring precise matching and synchronisation, to ensure reliable and lossless data transmission.
