Electrical voltage - definition
Electrical voltage is the difference in electric potential between two points within an electric field and represents a measure of the field’s ability to perform work associated with moving an electric charge. It is expressed in volts (V) and defines the amount of potential energy per unit charge transferred between the points. In the context of electrical circuits, voltage is defined as the work required to move a unit positive charge against the electric force present in the system.
The phenomenon of electrical voltage arises from the existence of electrostatic or dynamic fields, generated by an uneven distribution of charges or time-varying current flows. In conductors, such as metallic wires, voltage causes the movement of charge carriers, resulting in an electric current. In insulators, despite the presence of voltage, the movement of charges is highly restricted or entirely blocked, allowing their use as isolating elements in circuits.
In engineering practice, voltage is categorized into direct and alternating types, depending on its time characteristics. Direct voltage maintains a constant value over time, while alternating voltage exhibits periodic variations in amplitude, phase, and frequency. Voltage is measured using voltmeters or advanced electronic instruments that allow real-time signal analysis.
Electrical voltage plays a crucial role in describing phenomena related to energy transfer, operation of electronic devices, interactions between charges, and mechanisms of energy conversion in power systems, converters, and power supplies. As an operational parameter, voltage directly influences the safety, efficiency, and functionality of electrical and electronic systems, making its control and regulation one of the fundamental aspects of electrical engineering.
