Insulator is a material or structural component characterized by very high electrical resistance, used to separate conductive parts of a circuit to prevent the flow of electric current. Its primary function is to protect users, devices, and systems from electric shock, short circuits, or damage caused by uncontrolled current conduction. Insulators are used in both microelectronics and power engineering, where they safeguard transmission lines, installation components, and measuring equipment.
The insulating properties stem from the atomic structure of the material, which lacks free charge carriers capable of conducting current. Typical insulating materials include plastics, glass, ceramics, rubber, air, and various composites. The choice of an insulator depends on operating conditions such as voltage, temperature, humidity, electric field frequency, as well as chemical and mechanical resistance.
An insulator may also serve a supporting and structural function, as in power engineering, where specially shaped insulators support high-voltage conductors while electrically separating them from support structures. In electronics, insulating elements appear as coatings on conductors, dielectrics in capacitors, or separation layers in printed circuit boards. Besides electrical insulation , these materials often also act as thermal insulators, preventing heat transfer between device components.
In the context of technical safety, the effectiveness of an insulator is defined, among other parameters, by its dielectric strength — the maximum voltage a material can withstand without breakdown. Technical standards and safety regulations specify minimum insulation requirements necessary for the proper and safe operation of electrical and electronic systems.
