Isolation - definition

Isolation is the property of a material or structure to restrict the flow of energy, particles or information between separated areas. Others use the term in a technical context with different meanings depending on the field - it includes electrical, thermal, acoustic, vibration or electromagnetic insulation, among others. The purpose of using insulation is to ensure safety, improve energy efficiency, protect sensitive components or separate signals.

In electrical engineering insulation refers to the use of electrically non-conductive materials to prevent current flow between conductors, circuits or components. Insulating materials, such as plastics, ceramics, glass or electrical insulating oils, protect against short circuits, paralysis and degradation of equipment under the influence of operating voltages and surges. The quality of insulation is determined, among other things, by its dielectric strength, volume resistivity and resistance to environmental conditions.

In mechanical engineering and construction, thermal insulation limits heat transfer between spaces of different temperatures. It is used to protect against energy losses and to stabilise the operating conditions of equipment and rooms. In acoustics, on the other hand, insulation serves to dampen noise and limit the propagation of sound waves. In Automation and Electronics it is also important to use galvanic isolation - electrically separating different parts of a system while allowing signal transmission via transformers, opto-isolators or capacitive coupling.

The selection of the appropriate type and level of insulation depends on the physical parameters of the operating environment, the required durability, temperature range, voltage, frequency and safety standards. Properly designed insulation has a direct impact on the reliability, durability and functionality of technical systems.
