A dielectric is a material that poorly conducts electric current but effectively stores electric charge in the presence of an electrostatic field. It is characterized by a very high electrical resistivity and a low concentration of free charge carriers, meaning that under normal conditions, no significant current flows through it. Dielectric properties arise from the atomic structure and the ability of molecules to become polarized when exposed to an external electric field, resulting in the formation of internal dipoles.
In technical systems, dielectrics serve as insulators, separating conductive elements and preventing unwanted current flow. Their application is especially important in the design of capacitors, where a dielectric material placed between the electrodes increases the device’s ability to store electrical energy. The performance of electronic components, cables, high-voltage systems, and microwave devices depends on key dielectric parameters such as permittivity, dielectric strength, and loss factor.
Dielectrics can be natural or synthetic and may exist in various physical states—including solids, liquids, or gases. The selection of an appropriate dielectric material depends on application-specific requirements such as operating temperature range, chemical resistance, durability, and the influence of signal frequency. In advanced electronic technologies, dielectrics play a crucial role in the miniaturization and enhancement of integrated circuit performance, as well as in the protection of circuits against electrical breakdown.
