Frequency - definition

Frequency is a physical quantity that defines the number of repetitions of a periodic phenomenon per unit of time. In the SI system, it is expressed in hertz (Hz), where one hertz corresponds to one complete cycle per second. The concept of frequency is fundamental in numerous scientific and engineering disciplines—such as physics, electrical engineering, acoustics, and telecommunications—serving as a key parameter for describing oscillations, waves, and signals.

In the context of electromagnetic waves, frequency determines how rapidly the magnetic and electric fields oscillate over time, directly influencing the wavelength and propagation characteristics. In electronic circuits, frequency refers to the rate of voltage or current changes, which is crucial for the operation of generators, filters, oscillators, and data transmission systems. In acoustics, frequency represents the number of vibrations of a sound source per unit time and is directly related to the perceived pitch of the sound by the human ear.

Frequency is also essential in signal analysis, where it enables signal representation in the frequency domain using the Fourier transform. This facilitates the identification of dominant components and spectral content, with applications in diagnostics, communications, and digital signal processing. In automated systems, frequency may also describe the operating speed of actuators and controllers, affecting the dynamics and precision of system performance.
