GPS - definition

GPS (Global Positioning System) is a global satellite navigation system that enables precise determination of position, velocity, and time anywhere on Earth. It was developed and is maintained by the United States Department of Defense, but has been available for civilian use since the 1990s. The system relies on a network of satellites in Earth orbit that continuously transmit radio signals containing time and orbital position data.

GPS operates by measuring the time it takes for signals to travel from satellites to the receiver. By comparing signals from at least four different satellites, a GPS receiver calculates its three-dimensional position and the current time. With the use of highly accurate atomic clocks aboard the satellites and advanced correction algorithms, the system provides accuracy on the order of several meters for consumer-grade receivers and even centimeters when using differential techniques.

GPS is used in road, aviation, and maritime navigation, land surveying, emergency response systems, fleet management, as well as in mobile devices, autonomous vehicles, and industrial applications. In many systems, GPS is integrated with other technologies such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, or cellular networks to enhance signal accuracy and availability, especially in challenging terrain or urban environments. Its global coverage and independence from local infrastructure make GPS one of the core components of modern positioning and synchronization systems, forming the foundation for a wide range of location-based services.

Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
