Watt (W) is the SI unit of power, defined as the rate at which energy is transferred or converted. One watt corresponds to one joule of energy consumed or delivered per second. The unit is named after Scottish engineer James Watt, who played a key role in the development of steam engines and energy systems. The watt is widely used to describe mechanical, electrical, thermal, and radiant power.
In the context of electrical energy, the watt defines instantaneous power, calculated as the product of voltage and current in an electrical circuit. In alternating current (AC) systems, the power factor also plays a crucial role. In purely resistive circuits, active power equals apparent power. However, in circuits containing inductive or capacitive elements, the actual power delivered to the load may be lower due to the presence of reactive power.
From a physical perspective, the watt expresses a system’s ability to perform work or transmit energy over time. In mechanical systems, power in watts equals the product of force and velocity; in thermal systems, it represents the rate of heat transfer; in optics, it denotes the intensity of electromagnetic radiation. Thus, the application of this unit is universal across engineering and the natural sciences.
In engineering practice, power expressed in watts defines essential parameters of devices and systems—from power sources and motors to cooling and power supply units, as well as energy consumers such as lighting, computer hardware, or household appliances. Larger units include SI prefixes such as kilowatt (kW), megawatt (MW), and gigawatt (GW), commonly used for residential, industrial, and energy-sector applications, respectively.
