Database - definition of

Database is a structured set of information stored in a manner that allows it to be searched effectively, modification and management. The data in a database are organised according to a defined logical and physical structure, which allows them to be stored in a coherent and integrated manner. The main purpose of creating databases is to provide easy access to information while maintaining its integrity, security and minimisation of redundancy.

Modern databases are supported by specialised database management systems (DBMS - Database Management Systems), which allow operations such as adding, deleting, updating and downloading data. Most modern databases are based on a relational model, in which data are stored in tables linked by logical relationships. There are also alternative models, such as document-based, graphical, object-oriented or key-value, which are used depending on the type of data to be processed and the requirements of the application.

The database structure includes not only the data itself, but also metadata, that is, information describing the organisation and relationships between data elements. This makes it possible to create queries in a query language (usually SQL - Structured Query Language), that allow precise operations on information resources without the need to know implementation details.

From the user's point of view, a database is a tool enabling fast and error-free information retrieval, whereas from a technological perspective it is a complex system requiring appropriate design, optimisation, as well as access control mechanisms and protection against data loss. Today, databases are used in almost every area of life, from business and financial systems, through web applications, to industrial process control.
