EROEI (Energy Return on Energy Invested), or Energy Return on Energy Invested (EROEI), is a measure of the energy efficiency of a given energy extraction process. The EROEI value is defined as the ratio of the amount of useful energy obtained from a given source to the total energy consumed over the entire cycle of obtaining, processing, transporting and distributing that energy. A high EROEI means that a particular energy technology provides a significant energy surplus over the energy required to operate it, making it more sustainable and economically viable.
EROEI analysis includes consideration of energy consumed not only directly in operation (e.g. oil pumping, wind farm operation), but also indirectly - in the process of infrastructure construction, material production, operation of ancillary equipment and logistical processes.
EROEI values vary strongly depending on the energy source. Traditional fossil fuels, such as oil, have historically had high coefficients, but these are declining over time due to the increased costs of exploiting hard-to-reach deposits. In contrast, [renewable Power Sources](/ca/en/news/library-articles/page/69326 /), such as photovoltaics and wind, have an increasing EROEI as technology advances and production processes are optimised.
The EROEI is crucial in energy policy analyses, in assessing the long-term sustainability of the energy economy and in evaluating the limits of energy resource-based economic growth. A low EROEI may mean that an energy process, although technically feasible, is not viable from a net energy perspective.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation. The catalog includes over 1,500,000 products from 1,300 leading manufacturers.
