I²S (Inter-IC Sound) is a digital serial interface designed to transfer uncompressed audio data between integrated circuits in electronic systems. Developed by Philips, this standard is widely used in audio applications such as digital-to-analogue converters (DACs), analogue-to-digital converters (ADCs), power amplifiers, audio processors and codecs audio. The I²S bus is optimised for high quality, low latency audio data transmission.
Unlike the general I²C interface, the I²S bus is not used for general-purpose communication, but exclusively for real-time transmission of audio samples. The data is transmitted synchronously with respect to the clock signal and contains no additional control information - the protocol assumes that synchronisation and the data format are predetermined. A typical configuration includes three lines: Serial Data (SD), Bit Clock (BCLK) and Word Select (WS), with the possible presence of an additional Master Clock (MCLK) clock signal for systems requiring higher precision.
The I²S format is oriented towards two-channel (stereo) data, where each channel is represented by a sequence of bits encoding the amplitude value of the signal at a given time. Transmission is usually in 16-, 24- or 32-bit format, with data transmitted in MSB-first order. The interface can operate in either master or slave mode, depending on which chip generates the clock signals. Thanks to signal simplicity and the small number of lines required, the I²S allows Audio components to be easily integrated on a single PCB, with minimal interference to the analogue path.
I²S is characterised by high transmission quality and low noise, as it eliminates the need to convert data into analogue format at the transmission stage. For this reason, it has found application in a wide range of audio equipment - from consumer equipment to musical instruments to professional and industrial sound systems.
