ISO (International Organisation for Standardisation) is an independent, non-governmental international organisation whose objective is to develop, publish and promote international technical, commercial and industrial standards in order to harmonise standards globally. ISO was founded in 1947 and brings together national standards bodies from more than 160 countries, each representing their country in the development of normative documents.
The organisation plays a key role in creating a framework for quality, interoperability, safety and efficiency in almost all areas of technical and industrial activity, from materials production, quality management and environmental protection to information security and digital technologies. The standards developed by ISO are the result of a consensus of international working groups made up of industry experts, scientists, industry representatives and regulatory bodies.
While ISO documents are voluntary in nature, their implementation is widely recognised as part of good engineering practice and a market standard, especially in the context of global supply chains, certification and compliance with contractual requirements. Examples of the best-known ISO standards are ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), ISO/IEC 27001 (information security management) or ISO 50001 (energy management).
ISO's organisational structure includes technical committees (TCs), subcommittees (SCs) and working groups (WGs), where specific standards, revisions and new normative initiatives are developed. ISO also collaborates with other global standards organisations, such as IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and ITU (International Telecommunication Union), ensuring cross-sectoral consistency and compatibility of standards.
