Quantum mechanics is a branch of theoretical physics dealing with the description of phenomena on the atomic and subatomic Scales, where the classical laws of mechanics no longer apply. It is based on the concept of quantisation of physical quantities, according to which certain properties of particles - such as energy, momentum or angular momentum - can only take on discrete values, called quanta.

It describes the probability of finding a particle at a particular place and time, according to the Copenhagen interpretation. The development of this theory led to the formulation of the Schrödinger equation, which is the primary tool for describing the evolution of the state of a system over time. Quantum mechanics also introduces the concept of corpuscular-wave duality, according to which objects such as electrons or photons can exhibit both wave and particle properties, depending on how they are observed. It describes phenomena such as quantum tunneling, entanglement of states, quantum interference and decoherence - which have no counterparts in classical physics.
