Octet - definition

An octet is a unit of digital information consisting of exactly eight bits, commonly used in computing, telecommunications and computer systems to represent data. In most modern computer architectures, the octet is synonymous with the byte, although historically in some systems the byte may have consisted of a different number of bits. The standardisation of the octet as a unit of eight bits has been adopted to ensure unambiguous definitions in international standards such as ISO/IEC 80000-13.

In numerical systems, an octet can represent values from 0 to 255 in decimal or 00 to FF in hexadecimal. In technical practice, octets are used in character encoding (e.g. ASCII, UTF-8), in network addressing (e.g. IPv4 addresses consist of four octets), in data transmission and in defining operational memory structures.

Each bit in an octet is assigned a weight corresponding to powers of 2, allowing easy conversion between the binary and decimal systems. In the context of data transmission, octets play a key role in the standardisation of data frames, where they ensure uniform packetisation and interpretation of transmitted information. In networked systems, transmission protocols such as TCP/IP treat data as streams of octets, which facilitates the handling and processing of large amounts of information in a way that is independent of the hardware architecture of a particular computer system.

A precise understanding of the octet concept is essential in the design of digital circuits, the development of communication protocols, low-level programming and the analysis of data structures, where operations on bits and bytes underpin the operation of algorithms and operating systems.
