Fleeting memory is a type of computer memory that only stores data during active power. Once the power source is removed, any stored information is irretrievably lost. This type of memory is mainly used as operational memory, used to temporarily store data while the system is running - both in general-purpose computers and in embedded systems.
A characteristic feature of ephemeral memory is its high data access speed, making it suitable for applications requiring intensive information exchange in a short period of time. The most common types of ephemeral memory are DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and SRAM (Static Random Access Memory). DRAM stores data in Capacitors that require periodic refreshing, while SRAM uses bistable Flip-Flops that maintain a logical state as long as power is supplied.
Fleeting memory plays a key role in data processing, acting as an intermediate link between the slower Mass Storage and the fast processor. It provides storage for the code of the executing program, temporary variables, data buffers and the operating system context. By design, this memory is designed for the lowest possible latency and high bandwidth, while maintaining an acceptable level of power consumption.
Despite the lack of durability of stored data, ephemeral memory is an indispensable component of modern digital systems. Its technical parameters, such as access time, capacity, power consumption and unit cost, are important criteria in the design of electronic circuits and computer architectures. It co-exists with non-volatile memories, together forming a memory hierarchy that provides a balance between performance, durability and the economics of system operation.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
