Nonvolatile memory is a type of computer memory that retains stored data even when power is removed. Unlike ephemeral memory, such as DRAM, non-volatile memory allows information to be permanently stored without the need to refresh it periodically. It underpins the functioning of many electronic devices, from embedded systems to personal computers and servers.
Others non-volatile memory technology includes a variety of physical and structural solutions, including semiconductor memories such as EEPROM, Flash, MRAM or resistive memories. What they have in common is the ability to write and read data repeatedly, while retaining information for long periods of time - from months to many years. Depending on the type, access to the stored data can be sequential or direct, which affects the speed of operation and application of a given chip.
In practice, non-volatile memory is used to store firmware, system configurations, boot code, and also as Mass Storage - in the form of media such as SSDs, Memory Cards, Pendrives or ROMs. Thanks to their increasing capacity and decreasing size, these types of chips have also found their way into mobile and portable electronic systems, where low power consumption and resistance to external factors are crucial.
Today's non-volatile memory-based solutions also integrate data loss protection mechanisms such as error correction, cryptography and cell wear detection. Also important are the parameters of write endurance, operating speed, data retention and the number of write/erase cycles, which determine the efficiency and reliability of these memories in industrial, consumer and specialised applications.
Transfer Multisort Elektronik (TME) is one of the world’s largest global distributors of electronic components, electrotechnical parts, workshop equipment, and industrial automation.
