ROM - definition

ROM (Read-Only Memory) is a type of non-volatile semiconductor memory designed for storing data that remains unchanged during normal device operation. Unlike RAM, ROM retains stored information even after power is removed, making it particularly useful for permanently storing boot code (firmware), configuration tables, or essential system routines.

The defining characteristic of ROM is that data can typically only be read during regular system use. Writing to ROM, if allowed, is performed either during manufacturing or through specialized procedures and equipment. However, there are ROM variants that permit limited programming: PROM (Programmable ROM), EPROM (Erasable Programmable ROM), and EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable ROM). These types allow the content to be modified under specific conditions while maintaining data permanence.

ROM plays a crucial role in the architecture of computers and digital devices, serving as the foundation for embedded systems, controllers, BIOS systems, and many other components. Due to its reliability and resistance to accidental data changes, ROM ensures system stability and the security of critical software. ROM structures can be based on mask ROMs—programmed during manufacturing—or on more flexible solutions that allow for user-updatable firmware.

From a technical standpoint, ROM consists of a matrix of memory cells, where the presence or absence of a conductive connection represents a logical one or zero. Modern implementations allow ROM to be integrated directly into integrated circuits, improving energy efficiency and reducing device size. ROM remains an essential component in systems requiring stable operation and data permanence regardless of power status.
