Volt-ampere (VA) is a unit of apparent power used in electrical engineering, particularly in alternating current (AC) circuits . It is the product of the rms values of the voltage (expressed in volts ) and the current (expressed in amperes) in a given load or appliance. Unlike watts (W), which refer to active power - actually converted into useful work - the volt-ampere takes into account the total power supplied to the system, regardless of what proportion of it is actually used.
In AC circuits, due to the possible phase shift between voltage and current, the total power supplied to the load is divided into active power (W), reactive power (var) and apparent power (VA). The volt-ampere describes the latter and makes it possible to determine the maximum requirements of the appliance with respect to the power supply, regardless of the power factor (cos φ). This is particularly important in the design of power supplies, transformers, generators and UPS systems, which must be capable of handling the full apparent load.
The apparent power value is not directly converted into heat, light or motion, but influences the load on power system components. Volt-amperes are therefore used as rating parameters that determine the transmission and design capacity of electrical equipment. In single-phase systems, apparent power is expressed by the formula S = U × I, while in three-phase systems - S = √3 × U × I, with U and I being the rms values of the phase-to-phase voltage and line current.
Despite its similarity to a watt, the unit VA clearly indicates a difference in the nature of the load - particularly where there are Inductive Components or Capacitive Components that do not consume energy but affect the total power flow in the network. In engineering practice, the distinction between VA and W is crucial for the correct selection and operation of equipment in AC installations.
