The majority of universal semiconductor diodes are currently made of silicon (and rarely of germanium), with various levels of doping. This is the main differentiating factor that determines the application possibilities for particular types of diodes.
The key parameter of universal diodes is the acceptable inverse voltage, i.e. voltage between the anode and the cathode in a reverse biased state. It decides about the operating voltage of the circuit. Forward voltage is important, too. Furthermore, when selecting a diode, pay attention to the forward current – it cannot be lower than the anticipated current in your application.
Another parameter influencing the potential application of a diode is diode capacity. Small capacity usually means that it is a fast switching diode. It’s also called a freewheeling diode, and it’s a perfect choice for protecting your circuits. The higher the capacity, the slower the diodes operate, and they are usually used as rectifier diodes. If the capacity of a diode changes according to the voltage applied, it is called a varicap diode.
Universal diodes available at TME
TME is a distributor of numerous manufacturers of semiconductor components, such as Diotec Semiconductor, Infineon Technologies, Vishay, ON Semiconductor, Lamina, DC Components, Diodes Incorporated, Nexperia, or ST Microelectronics. The offer includes diodes to be used in small electronic devices, as well as in energy sector. The latter usually come in screwed-on packages, whereas smaller diodes are usually offered with packages for THT and SMD assembly.
