Python is a high-level, interpreted general-purpose programming language designed for readability, conciseness and ease of writing code. It was developed in the late 1980s and early 1990s by Guido van Rossum and has since been dynamically developed as an open-source project. Python features a syntax similar to natural language, which makes it easy for beginners to learn and enables rapid application development and prototyping.
The language supports multiple programming paradigms, including object-oriented, procedural and functional programming. Its dynamic typing and automatic memory management allow for efficient resource management and simplified software development. Python comes with an extensive standard library, including functions for file handling, network communication, mathematical operations, working with databases and many other applications.
One of Python's key features is its ecosystem, including thousands of libraries and modules that extend the language's capabilities in areas such as data analysis (NumPy, pandas), machine learning (TensorFlow, scikit-learn), automation (Selenium, Ansible), web application development (Django, Flask), engineering simulation, robotics and electronics (e.g. MicroPython). Python is also a popular language in academic, educational and research environments.
Versions of the language are developed by the Python Software Foundation and made publicly available. Python runs on a number of operating systems, including Windows, Linux and macOS, making it platform-independent. Its versatility and flexibility have helped to establish it as one of the most widely used programming languages in the world.
