Bias - definition of

Bias is a technical term with a varied meaning, depending on the field of science and technology, in which it is used. In general, it refers to a systematic deviation, distortion or shift in value, which may affect the accuracy, the objectivity or neutrality of the measurement process, algorithm or system.

In electronics, bias refers to the voltage or current of polarisation, used to set appropriate operating conditions for semiconductor components, such as Transistors or Diodes. Proper selection of the bias value allows proper conduction of current and ensures linearity or amplification of the signal. Lack of correct bias can result in signal distortion or incorrect circuit operation.

In statistics and data analysis bias refers to a systematic estimation error, which causes, that the expected value of an estimator differs from the actual value of the parameter. This type of bias may result from faulty sampling, incorrect analysis methodology or external confounding factors.

In the context of artificial intelligence i machine learning bias can refer to both a component of the model's decision function (e.g. as an added value in the neurons of an artificial network), as well as to biases in the training data, that lead to inequalities or undesirable patterns in the performance of the algorithm. Bias in this view is the subject of research into algorithmic ethics and the fairness of decision models.

In each of these areas, bias affects the interpretation of the results of the, operation of equipment or the quality of decisions based on the data being processed, therefore, its identification and control is an important part of the design and analysis process.
