Plastic standoffs – what are they used for?

Plastic standoffs are mechanical elements used for permanent mounting of electric/electronic device elements such as, for example, PCBs, display modules, power supplies, panels with buttons or other components. Plastic standoffs are insulators, which means that on the one hand they firmly fix the components, and on the other hand do not allow the current to flow between them in any other way than through the connector.

Choosing a right standoff for your application

Plastic standoffs are most often made in a form of a pipe or a post with threaded tips (you can fix a nut on them). At times, there is a hole on one end of the post, and the other end is threaded. Some standoffs can have a kind of a snap fastener which firmly fixes them in the hole in the board, without the need to use nuts, bolts or screws. Standoffs with a circular or hexagonal cross-section are most popular solutions. The latter type is used when the standoff has to be held with a tool while mounting.

Plastic standoffs can be made from various materials. The term “plastic” encompasses synthetic materials with different mechanical and electrical properties and of varied resistance to environmental factors. The most often used materials include:

PBT

Resistance to:

  • stress corrosion cracking (SCC),
  • thermal ageing,
  • water, weak acids, oils and fats.

No resistance to:

  • concentrated acids,
  • alkalis,
  • phenols.

Polyamide

Characteristics:

  • good mechanical properties,
  • low friction coefficient,
  • high ultimate tensile strength (UTS),
  • retained shape at high temperatures,
  • electrical properties strongly dependent on moisture.

Resistance to:

  • abrasion,
  • petrol and solvents.

Polystyrene

Characteristics:

  • high stiffness and surface quality,
  • low hygroscopicity,
  • good insulation properties,
  • depending on the butadiene content, low or high resistance to surges,
  • tendency to crack under stress,
  • susceptibility to electrostatic discharges,
  • sensitivity to prolonged exposure to atmospheric conditions.

Resistance to:

  • water,
  • alkalis,
  • diluted inorganic acids,
  • aqueous solutions of the majority of salts.

Thermoplastics (a group of thermoplastic materials)

The most often used thermoplastic materials include: polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyoxymethylene (POM), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), polyamide (PA).

Characteristics:

  • can be reshaped and processed after heating above the operating temperature;
  • possibility of welding and gluing,
  • good insulation properties.
