Zener diodes are a subgroup of semiconductor diodes that won't get damaged when the voltage applied to them exceeds their breakdown voltage. Besides, they have low dynamic resistance in such a state. What it basically means is that when you reverse bias them with a voltage above the breakdown voltage, they begin to conduct current but the voltage seen at both ends of the diode almost stands still, even if the current passing through the diode increases. Due to this feature, Zener diodes are perfect components of voltage regulators, where they work as a source of reference voltage.
When selecting a Zener diode, you should consider not only the Zener voltage, but also the power of the diode. In some applications, the stabilized voltage has to be precisely defined. The majority of Zener diodes have tolerance of ±5%, but you can also find diodes with tolerance of ±2%. Package is important, too. Currently, the most common are diodes in packages for SMD assembly, but you can easily find components for THT as well.
Zener diodes available at TME
TME’s offer includes nearly 2,000 different Zener diodes with breakdown voltage as low as 1V. The majority of diodes have tolerance of ±5%, but you can also find models with tolerance of ±2% offered by Nexperia, Vishay, or Diotec Semiconductor. Other represented manufacturers are: DC Components, Diodes Incorporated, ON Semiconductor, and Taiwan Semiconductor.
An interesting option is double Zener diodes in a single package, manufactured by Diotec Semiconductor. They share a single anode, and due to a specific design their parameters are more consistent than in case of two separate diodes. They are useful in applications where two independently regulated sources of power with exactly the same parameters are required.
